Attune Intelligence

A self-funded research lab probing the substrate from which intelligence emerges.

Attune Intelligence

Attune Intelligence is an independent research lab. No investors, no series A, no institutional affiliation. The consulting funds the hardware. The questions drive the work.

The research asks what intelligence is as a natural phenomenon. Not a product feature or a benchmark score, but a physical process that cells have been channeling for billions of years before we named it. The boundary between living systems and silicon is less clear than most of the field assumes, and that matters for how we build.

The lab’s first published paper, “What Lives?”, used computational tools to reveal structure in the question “what is life?” where centuries of debate has produced definitions that mostly talk past each other. We suggest that this challenge persists because the definition of life maps a multidimensional latent space rather than awaiting a singular answer, and we offer a low-resolution map of what we observe that space to look like.

The research runs on infrastructure I’m building from scratch. I don’t want to be dependent on another company’s compute for the heart of my work, and the way inference hardware is consolidating, that dependency is only getting worse with time. The whole build is documented in the Building the Lab series.

The research generates questions. The consulting generates revenue and keeps the work independent.

The engagements are technical, hands-on, and scoped to problems where depth matters more than headcount.

What I work on:

  • Agentic AI systems: architecture, orchestration, and production deployment of multi-agent systems.
  • Data infrastructure: pipelines, warehouses, and the plumbing that makes ML work at scale. Postgres, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS.
  • Applied ML for life sciences: cancer genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology.
  • Technical strategy: for teams building AI products and trying to separate signal from hype. Architecture reviews, build-vs-buy decisions, inference cost modeling.

How it works: Short engagements (weeks, not quarters). I work directly with you. No account managers, no subcontractors. Best fit for teams sitting on biomedical or operational data that should be powering decisions but isn’t yet. If the problem is interesting enough to overlap with the research, the rate reflects that.
